Do I Need 1, 2, or 4 Tires on My AWD Vehicle?

At J & H Tires, we get this question all the time. The answer depends on your tread depth and your vehicle’s design. AWD systems need tires that are very close in size. Even small differences can cause costly damage to the drivetrain.

Our Guidelines

Replace All 4 Tires

  • If your tires are worn below 6/32"
  • If the difference between the new tire and your current tires is more than 3/32"
  • If your vehicle’s manufacturer requires it

Replace 1 Tire

  • If your other three tires have plenty of tread (7/32" or more)=
  • If the new tire matches the same brand and model

Replace 2 Tires

  • If two tires are much more worn than the others, but the tread is still above 4/32"
  • If your AWD system allows slight differences front to rear

Why It Matters
Keeping tread depth consistent helps your AWD system work correctly, improves traction, and prevents damage to expensive components like differentials or transfer cases.
At J & H Tires, we’ll always measure your tread, explain your options, and help you choose the safest and most cost-effective solution.
